Bernabeleva Carril Del Ray Garnacha 2012

92 points - Luis Gutierrez

This wine is made from 75-year-old Grenache vines rooted in a gently sloping south-facing plot. This site has granitic soil, shallow at the top and deep at the lower part, due to rain erosion. The parcel covers 2.5 hectares, with 2,000 vines per hectare. This vineyard is the latest ripening plot of the estate. Maceration lasts over 40 days, during which the wine is pigeaged in the oak tank. Malolactic fermentation takes place in French oak barriques, where the wine remains as long as necessary. The wine is neither fined nor filtrated. The 2012 Carril del Rey is pure old-vine Garnacha from a single vineyard in San Martín de Valdeiglesias, a south-facing vineyard, perhaps the warmer of their single vineyard, and the old vines have some varieties mixed with the Garnacha. It has notes of plums and blueberries, ripe with no traces of oak, perhaps a smoky touch intermixed with the rosemary and thyme, with a Mediterranean profile, some hints of aniseed and fennel, and a palate that is medium-bodied, keeping the freshness with some blood-orange flavors and very fine and abundant tannins, with some pleasant rusticity. This is approachable now but should polish its tannins with a little bit of time in the bottle. - Luis Gutierrez
