In July 1891, Frederick and Herbert Kay collected selected Shiraz cuttings from Thomas Hardy's Tintara Vineyard. Planting in 'Block 6' of their McLaren Vale Amery Vineyard began a year later on July 18, 1892. The first wine from these vines was made in 1897m the Kay Brothers' third vintage. From the original 12 acres, only 4 remain and although the quantity of grapes harvested each year is small, the quality is outstanding. Block 6 Shiraz embodies the pioneering spirit and determination shown by the founding Kay family, a legacy continued by the 3rd and 4th generations to this date. This vintage coincides with the 125th Anniversary of the gnarled old vines which were planted by ancestors providing an exceptionally healthy crop of 11.37 tonnes - seemingly wanting to tell the family how enduring they are, and how unique the Amery vineyard is. It is a powerful, concentrated Shiraz, exhibiting elegance and finesse whilst encompassing superior complexity and structure. With proven longevity, time and cellaring will reward the patient drinker.
