This Pinot Gris from Mahi is a single estate wine that expresses the particular vineyard from which it comes. This wine is from a parcel of grapes grown in a vineyard located just outside the township of Ward, owned by Sarah Davies and Andrew Craig. Being at the southern end of the Marlborough appellation and so close to the sea, the vineyard benefits from cool southerly winds that come up the coast and help retain fruit character.
The grapes were harvested ensuring that time on skins was maximised and a small portion of the juice was barrel-fermented in older French oak to give greater weight, though ensuring that wood is not evident on the nose. The balance of the wine was then pressed and taken to tank for a cool fermentation to preserve flavour.
The combination of fruit characters, a small amount of barrel and some wild yeast notes work to make a dry, complex style of Pinot Gris.
